Freeman’s Realizes $3,259,520 in June 10 Important Jewelry Auction  Featuring Grace & Gavel: Jewelry from the Estate of Sandra Schultz Newman

Freeman’s Important Jewelry sale on June 10 in New York realized $3,259,520 with an 86% sell-through rate.

 

The sale was led by the single-owner collection Gavel and Grace: Jewelry from the Collection of the Honorable Sandra Schultz Newman, featuring a diamond ring that achieved $480,000. With strong results in signed jewelry, fine diamonds, and colored gemstones, the auction achieved a 92% sell-through by value, and 56% of lots sold at or above estimate.

Lot 100 | Onyx, Diamond, and Yellow Gold Collar Necklace | Sold for $24,320 

The day’s top achievements were outstanding pieces from the Estate of Justice Sandra Schultz Newman, which sold for $772,480. The collection’s sell-through rate was 87% by lot and 97% by value.  

The auction’s top lot was a remarkable diamond and platinum ring featuring a 19.12-carat emerald-cut diamond (Lot 95), selling for $480,000 against a low estimate of $350,000. This ring, purchased with the winnings from Justice Newman’s record-setting racehorse, Nihilator, perfectly captures her bold elegance and refined confidence.  

A Philadelphia native, Justice Newman built a pioneering legal career marked by historic firsts, including serving as Montgomery County’s first female Assistant District Attorney and becoming the first woman elected to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Robust results from the collection underscore the enduring value of estate jewelry and the continued strength of the fine jewelry market.

Concluding the summer auction’s successes were unique signed pieces by Buccellati, Cartier, and Marina B. Resplendent with gold and colorful floral motifs, the star pieces of the day included a Marina B Diamond and Yellow Gold 'Esclave' Choker Necklace (Lot 76), which sold for $89,600 against an estimate of $25,000–$35,000; a Cartier Art Deco Yellow Gold and Multigem Table Box (Lot 34) that sold for $73,600 versus an estimate of $40,000–$60,000; and a Buccellati Sapphire, Emerald, and Diamond Giardinetto Brooch (Lot 23), which fetched $35,200 compared to an estimate of $12,000–$18,000.
