Civil War Era Cavalry Trimmed Mounted Services Jacket
American Civil War

US Pattern 1858 Mounted Services Jacket made from indigo dyed blue wool broadcloth with an undyed cotton muslin lining, padded chest and faded yellow branch of service herringbone pattern tape trim. Jacket features five-piece construction with a 2.25" standing collar with four buttons, a twelve button front, belt support pillows on the rear, functional two-button cuffs and a hook closure at the neck. Buttons are cuff sized general service eagles. Lining of right arm hole (armscye) is stamped with the contractor name J. LEE./N.Y. and with the size stamp 2 and X. The left armscye is stamped J. LEE. 2./N.Y. with a very light and illegible stamp below it that may be an inspection stamp. Hand corded buttonholes with moderate wear and thread loss, hand stitching at armscye. Joseph Lee was a major New York City based clothing contractor during the Civil War who produced hundreds of thousands of garments for the US Army. Included in his numerous contracts from 1862-1865 were more than 250,000 enlisted sack coats, 50,000 stable frocks, 32,000 pairs of trousers, 20,000 cavalry jackets, 5,000 artillery jackets, 50,000 haversacks and 122,000 shelter halves.
