Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. -- [NEW ZEALAND]. FERRIER, William (b. 1855), photographer. Mount Cook with Descriptive Notes & Map. Timaru, New Zealand.  


Oblong octavo (7 1/2 x 9 1/2 in.) 190 x 240 mm. 20 albumen photographs, 4 x 6 in., mounted recto/verso to 6 3/4 x 8 3/4 in. album pages (rich tonality to many prints, some toning, occasional spotting, toning and some soiling to album pages).  Brown cloth with gilt title (wear to extremities). The album contains photographs, each titled and numbered in the negative, documenting of a journey from Timaru to Mount Cook along the Washdyke road. Also included is a mounted, 4 x 5 3/4 in. image of a printed map of Mount Cook and its Glaciers & Lakes (soiling and spotting to album page), and a partially mounted 10 pp. booklet entitled "A Pleasure Drive from Timaru to Mount Cook," describing the journey and each photograph.

The photographs are credited to William Ferrier, who was born in Edinburgh and arrived in New Zealand in 1869 at the age of 14. He established his first photographic studio in Christchurch in 1879 then moved to Timaru in 1881, where he became well established and exhibited regularly at his studio.
