Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY -- AVIATION]. SMITH, H.B. photographer. Silver gelatin photograph of a Baldwin Type Dirigible. Atlantic City, NJ, [1910].

15 x 10 7/8 in. silver gelatin photograph (very minor toning); matted and framed to 26 x 21 5/8 in. (not examined out of frame). Photographer's copyright in negative.

Designed by Thomas Scott Baldwin, the Baldwin Dirigible was the first powered aircraft ordered by the Aeronautical Division for use by the U.S. Army Signal Corps. It was first demonstrated at a 1907 air meet in St. Louis, entered service in 1908, but was scrapped by the military by 1912. Here, the full length of the airship is visible and surrounded by a large crowd. A hanger door is visible on the right edge, and several carriages, motorbikes, and early automobiles are visible in the foreground.
