Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. -- [NEW ZEALAND & AUSTRALIA]. A group of 2 albums containing photographs of Watertown, Australia and Gisborne, New Zealand. 


Oblong octavo (8 x 11 in.) 200 x 285 mm. 45 photographs, ranging in size from 3 x 4 in. to 6 x 8 in., many mounted recto to 7 1/2 x 10 1/2 in. album pages, with some mounted recto/verso (toning, soiling to some prints, some prints have also faded significantly, soiling and chipping/loss to album pages). One quarter black morocco gilt (lacking spine, heavy rubbing at extremities, leaves detached). Many of the photographs are accompanied by period captions. Identified scenes and subjects include: The Wakami (Big Canoe), a "steamer they went out in Sep 14th 1899." -- Multiple exterior and interior views of the Glynn Estate, incl. a sheep farm, a residence (which is accompanied by a 2 penciled sketches of the home). -- A view of four men posed outside a rustic homestead. -- A view of woodsman "J.S. Barton & white pine log." -- Views of men at camp. -- Images of cattle. -- 2 views of Gisborne, New Zealand. 

[With:] Oblong octavo (8 x 10 1/4 in.) 205 x 260 mm. 52 photographs, incl. cyanotypes, ranging in size from 2 1/4 x 3 1/2 in. to 6 x 8 in., most mounted recto/verso on 8 x 9 3/4 in. album pages (toning and some soiling to prints, toning, soiling, corner/edge wear to album pages). Morocco backed maroon cloth gilt (lacking spine, with leaves loose, fading, scuffing and wear to extremities). Most images are uncredited and unidentified. Identified scenes and subjects include: Landscape view of Watertown, Australia. -- Multiple views of a family doing leisurely activities, such as playing tennis, fishing, and preparing to go hunting. -- Multiple studio portraits and snapshots of men, women, and children, incl. groups riding horse-drawn wagons. -- 3 cyanotypes, incl. a young man in uniform on horseback, identified as "Cousin Willie before going to Australia."
