Rare Bergmann Schmeisser Prototype Pistol Leads Cowan’s Arms, Armor & Militaria Auction
CINCINNATI – A Bergmann Schmeisser Prototype 1897 Model 5 Experimental Pistol with Holster Stock led the way in Cowan’s Auctions’ May 3rd and 4th Arms, Armor & Militaria auctions last week. The museum quality prototype soared past its $15,000-25,000 estimate to realize $72,000. Overall, the auctions realized more than $1.4 million, with 97 percent of lots sold and 61 percent of lots sold within or above the estimate.
“This pistol is an outstanding display of technology that was among the best of its time,” commented Tim Carey, Cowan’s Director of Arms, Amor & Militaria. “We were pleased to be able to bring the Collection of James B. Stewart, an exceptional collection, to auction. We are delighted with the results and to see that the market for historic arms continues to be very strong.”

This gun is a remarkable example of turn of the century technology that showcases the innovations taking place at that time. Competitive bidding on the phones and in person led to the pistol making an impressive $72,000.
Coming from the Collection of James B. Stewart, a photographer and collector, this prototype was just many examples of strong prices achieved throughout the collection.
