Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR - ILLINOIS]. HUBERT, Charles F. (d. 1929). History of the Fiftieth Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry in the War of the Union. Kansas City, MO: Western Veteran Publishing Company, 1894.
8vo. Frontispiece, plates, in-text illustrations. (Minor toning.) Original publisher's illustrated medium sky blue cloth gilt (some separation to upper hinge, light wear to extremities).
FIRST EDITION of the detailed regimental history of the 50th Illinois by veteran Charles F. Hubert. He enlisted on 1 January 1864 as a sergeant major and was mustered into the Field & Staff of the 50th on 16 January. He was promoted to adjutant on 2 July 1865 before mustering out on 13 July 1865 at Louisville, KY. He was a member of GAR Post #96 (John Wood) in Quincy, IL after the war. The 50th Illinois was engaged at the Battles of Fort Henry, Fort Donelson, and Shiloh. Nevins remarks that the "many excerpts from soldiers' letters and diaries make this among the best of the Illinois unit studies."
Property from the Estate of Henry G. Lamont, Racine, Wisconsin
