Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. A collection of 25 items of Civil War accoutrements and ephemera, incl. buttons, hat plate, and photographs, comprising: 


Nine coat buttons. Various manufacture. 20-22 mm diam. brass buttons (some darkening and tarnishing). Each features the federal eagle with shield and includes an artillery example ("A" on shield, 21 mm), infantry ("I" on shield, 21 mm), and cavalry ("C" on shield, 22 mm). Two high domed examples may be post-war. -- Nine cuff buttons. [Waterbury, CT]: Scoville Mfg., n.d. 14mm. brass buttons (some tarnising, occasional dents). 

[With:] Crossed swords cavalry pin with "12" above and "I" below. Approx. 2 1/2 x 1 1/2 in. brass hat pin (some darkening). For unknown states 12th Cavalry, Company I. -- Large eagle hat plate. N.p.: N.p., n.d. 5 3/4 x 4 1/4 in. -- Crossed cannons U.S. artillery pin. N.p.: N.p., n.d. 3/4 x 1/2 in. mixed-metal pin.-- Shoulder strap for a major in the Medical Service (M.S.). 4 x 1 2/8 in. felt strap with couching. 

[Also with:] BOWMAN, W.E. Veterans of 1812. Ottawa, IL: W.E. Bowman, 29 Sept. 1874.  6 1/2 x 3 1/4 in. albumen stereoview on cardstock mount. Photographer's paper label to verso -- Portrait of elderly veterans in front of a tent, likely Civil War vets. N.p.: N.p., n.d. 5 3/8 x 2 7/8 in. albumen stereoview on cardstock mount (small nick out of the sky in the left image). -- Studio portrait of a veteran wearing a Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) medal. Bolckow, MO: Catterlin, n.d. Cabinet photograph on cardstock mount (light scuffing). Manuscript on verso: "Nelson to Frank." -- Ninth plate tintype studio portrait of a young man. N.p.: N.p., n.d. Ninth plate tintype (only mat, some rust and emulsion loss in center, image overall dark). -- Red, white, and blue ribbon from a medal. N.p.: N.p., n.d. (medal not present).
