Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. Pair of relics including tent stake and 1863 "Union Forever" token.


Tent stake from Gettysburg site. N.p.; N.p., [ca 1863]. Approximately 1 x 8 1/4 in. iron stake (some tarnishing); 21st-century frame (not examined out of frame). Provenance: Gettysburg Relics, 2011 (letter signed by Andrew Keyser mounted with stake). The stake is marked "Gettysburg" in white ink. A letter relates that it was excavated from an area occupied by South Carolina Confederate troops on 1 July 1862 during the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg.

[With:] 1863 Union Forever token. N.p.: N.p., 1863. 19 mm metal token (some tarnish, light wear to raised areas); slabbed and encased (not examined out of case). Obverse reads "First in War, First in Peace / 1863" above a monument of a man on horseback. Reverse reads "Union For Ever" surrounded by laurel and holly with a Federal shield. Provenance: Aunt Agda's Coins, Lindsborg, KS (slab label).
