Lot Description
[LINCOLN FUNERAL]. Cleveland, Columbus, & Cincinnati R.R. Special Time Schedule for the Train Conveying the Remains of Abraham Lincoln... 29 April 1865.
10 3/4 x 6 in. broadside printed on silk, mounted to board. (Marginal ink stains to left side, minor spotting, minor fraying.)
SPECIAL TIME SCHEDULE FOR THE JOURNEY OF LINCOLN'S FUNERAL TRAIN FROM CLEVELAND TO COLUMBUS.
The Lincoln funeral train departed Cleveland, Ohio, at 10:30 p.m. on April 28, 1865. From there, it traveled southwest to Columbus, pulling into Union Station at 7:30 a.m. on April 29. The overcast skies began to break as the casket was transferred by military escort to a hearse pulled by six white horses to the Capitol building. Thousands lined the route. An estimated 8,000 mourners per hour filed past the casket over the course of the day before the Capitol doors were closed at 6:00 p.m. and the casket returned to the train. Train schedules printed on silk, as seen here, were made as keepsakes for mourners, with precious few surviving today.
