Lot Description
[LINCOLN FUNERAL]. Partly printed ticket issued to Illinois Governor R.J. Oglesby, Albany, New York, [25-26] April 1865.
One page, oblong 24mo (108 x 70 mm), minor soiling, verso signed by Oglesby.
Richard Oglesby, along with Abraham Lincoln, John C. Fremont, and others, was among the earliest members of the Republican Party. In the lead-up to the 1860 presidential election, Oglesby was one of the strongest advocates for his old friend; it has even been suggested that it was he who came up with the "Railsplitter" nickname for Lincoln.
Upon the outbreak of war, Oglesby was appointed a colonel of the 8th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He fought in the Battles of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson and commanded troops at the Battle of Corinth, where he received near life-threatening injuries that, for all intents and purposes, effectively ended his military career. He successfully ran for governor of Illinois in 1864. He was among those who visited Lincoln on his deathbed at the Peterson House on 14 April 1865.
This ticket allowed the Governor accommodations at the Delavan House in Albany when the Lincoln funeral train passed through town.
