Lot Description

[History of Photography] Broadway from the Hospital

Lewis E. Walker (1826-1916), American.

Late 1850s salted-paper photograph on board, with letterpress title "Broadway from the Hospital, Negative by L.E. Walker - H.H. Snelling, Print" 7.5 x 10.5".

Walker operated a bookstore in downtown Warsaw for nearly 50 years, along the way becoming widely known for his stereoscopic and other views of Western New York. Henry Hunt Snelling (1817-1897) was born in Plattsburgh, New York and learned photography from the Anthony brothers. In 1849 he wrote The History and Practice of the Art of Photography, widely viewed as the first bound volume on the history of photography in America. He was the editor of the Photographic and Fine Art Journal (1851-1860), which included salted-paper photographs by prominent photographers.

The current print was probably derived from an issue of this journal. Issues of the journal, and by extension images from the same, are exceedingly rare.

Ex Arnold Crane Collection.
