Lot Description
[ENSLAVEMENT]. South Carolina affidavit containing revised statement by former slave in reference to a deceased USCT soldier.
Late 19th century partly printed affidavit, 8 x 10 in., Berkeley County, SC, 12 January 1895. Signed with an "x" as "his mark" by Sam Gillins, 57 years of age.
Affidavit concerns the claim of a soldier's widow, Martha Reed, for arrears of pay and bounty on behalf of her deceased husband, Sabie (spelled "Saibee" in HDS) Reed, who served in Company B of the 21st United States Colored Troops. The affidavit states that Sam Gillins was present at the time of Reed's death of consumption on 18 November 1882. The affidavit goes on to correct a previous error, indicating that Gillins misspoke about his age previously because he did not know it, but since "learned it from my former owner." Signed with an 'x' as 'his mark.'
