Lot Description
[COLONIAL]. British Major General and Governor of Virginia Alexander Spotswood. Oil on canvas.
19 x 16 3/4 in. oil on canvas portrait of Alexander Spotswood, mounted to a canvas board, approx. 24 x 22 in. overall. The frame and the canvas board upon which the painting is mounted look to be from the late 19th to early 20th century period.
Alexander Spotswood (1676-1740) was a British Major General and colonial governor of Virginia from 1710-1722. He captured and killed the pirate Ed Teach, led the first expedition to explore the Appalachian Mountains, rebuilt the College of William and Mary. As Postmaster General for British America (1730-39) he appointed Benjamin Franklin postmaster of Philadelphia.
