Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of 51 assorted ambrotype and tintype portraits of men, women, and children.

Horizontally-oriented quarter plate ambrotype of a trio of dapper young men seated shoulder-to-shoulder. (Some spots of loss and soiling throughout; resealed.) Housed in a Union case with scroll design (some surface wear, nicking, soiling). -- Seated sixth plate ambrotype portrait of an elderly woman wearing a bonnet, satiny shawl, lace gloves, and a pair of eyeglasses. (Some minor imperfections.) Housed in a pressed paper case (surface wear, repair to spine). Inscribed to case interior behind image: "Aunt Sally Green- / Wan[?] Pioneer- / Hoyt Family- / lady in lace gloves- / was aunt of Mrs. Chas. Hart - this portrait / is an early mercury / on copper fused glass. / V. W. Rudel - 1939- / Hoyt estate-Wan[indecipherable]." -- Sixth plate ambrotype portrait of an adolescent girl with short hair wearing an off-the-shoulder dress and gold-highlighted jewelry. (Some chemical darkening to edges, and overall slight discoloration; unsealed.) Mat stamped "KIMBALL & COOPER / 347 BROADWAY N-Y." Housed under mat, glass, and preserver only; no case. -- And 48 others, including sixth, ninth, and sixteenth plate ambrotype and tintype portraits. Many without cases. Conditions vary. -- Together, 51 ambrotype and tintype portraits of men, women, and children.
