Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 45 daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes of men, women, and children, some in Union cases.

Sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a freckle-faced young lady with curled locks and a gold-highlighted necklace and rings. (Some tarnishing to edges, few scattered spots.) Housed in a patriotic pressed paper case (heavy surface wear, losses, separations, soiling). -- Sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a woman holding a book open on her lap. (Tarnishing to edges, significant clouding and spotting throughout image plate, abundant spotting to mat.) Housed in a Union case with scroll design (nicking/chipping, soiling, some misalignment to closure). -- A pair of portraits of young men including a sixth plate daguerreotype and a ninth plate ambrotype, each with modern paper identifications behind images identifying them as members of the Neu family. (Daguerreotype plate with significant tarnish, clouding, spotting, and other imperfections, ambrotype with minor wear and imperfections.) Daguerreotype housed in a double-door pressed paper case (separation to bottom edge, wear and some loss throughout). Ambrotype housed in a fully separated pressed paper case (split at spine, wear throughout). -- Ninth plate ambrotype portrait of a young girl with curled locks and a necklace hand-tinted in red. She holds a cluster of flowers that have also been lightly hand-tinted pink and green. (Some chemical deterioration/discoloring to image, though subject remains largely vibrant and clear.) Housed in a pressed paper case (nearly separated at spine, significant surface wear and loss throughout). -- And 40 others. Many loose tintypes and other images without cases. Conditions vary. -- Together, 45 daguerreotype, ambrotype, and tintype portraits.
