Lot Description
[FLAGS]. 39-star parade flag with triple medallion star pattern. Ca 1889-1890.
10 x 15 in. flag printed on cotton, the 39 stars arranged in a triple medallion or global configuration with a star in each corner. Partially mounted to 10 1/2 x 15 1/2 in. canvas. Area of loss near lower right corner of field (approx. 4 x 4 1/2 in.)
The global medallion pattern was one of the most popular produced by flagmakers during the centennial period.
The nation never officially had 39 states as The Dakota Territory was admitted to the Union as North and South Dakota on the same day, 2 November 1889.
