Lot Description
[FLAGS]. 38-star American flag converted to a 48-star flag. Ca 1876-1950s.
Approx. 52 by 85 in. wool flag comprised of 38 double-appliqued, machine-sewn cotton stars with 10 later, double-appliqued, hand-sewn cotton stars on a two-part wool canton, machine-sewn wool stripes. Cotton hoist with two brass grommets, twice stamped with the name, "W.H. Davis."
The 38-stars commemorate the statehood of Colorado, which was admitted as the 38th state in August 1876 during the centennial celebration. The 48-star flag became official in 1912 following the addition of New Mexico and Arizona, and remained the official star count throughout WWI, WWII, and the Korean War, until Alaska gained statehood in 1959 and the 49th star was added.
Provenance: Collection of Jeffrey Kenneth Kohn, MD.
