Lot Description

[FLAGS]. 38-star American parade flag with rare circle-in-a-square medallion pattern. Ca 1876-1890.

5 x 8 5/8 in. flag printed on cotton, with 38 stars configured in a medallion star pattern comprised of a large central star, surrounded by a wreath of eleven stars, flanked by a star in each corner, and contained within a square of twenty-two stars that follow the perimeter of the square canton.

An exceptionally rare medallion star pattern that is scarcely encountered.

The 38-star flag was introduced on 1 August 1876 when Colorado became the 38th state, just 28 days after the official centennial celebration. The flag remained at 38 stars until the addition of five states in 1889.

Provenance: Collection of Jeffrey Kenneth Kohn, MD.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
