Lot Description

GRABILL, John C.H. (1849-1903), photog. Three photographs taken at Pine Ridge, incl. views of Big Foot's camp and Tasunka, Ota AKA Plenty Horses, the slayer of Lieutenant Casey, 1891.

3 photographs, approx. 8 3/4 x 7 1/8 in. or smaller, on cardstock mounts, each copyrighted by John C.H. Grabill in the negative or on the mount and including his Deadwood and Lead City, South Dakota imprint, ca 1890-1891. The scenes, two of which are numbered and captioned in the negatives, include: "3632. 'What's Left of Big Foot's Band' at Hostile Indian Camp, Jan. 16, '91." A small group of survivors of the Wounded Knee Massacre, including many women and children, sit and stand in front of tipis, some with blankets wrapped around them. -- "The Indian Girl's Home," providing a view of Native American girls and Indian police at Big Foot's village, 1890. With "Publisher's Proof" written in the negative, in place of a caption. -- "3690. Tasunka, Ota (alias Plenty Horses), the slayer of Lieut. Casey, near Pine Ridge," 1891. The print appears to have been remounted to thinner cardstock, verso with remnants of Grabill's printed paper label and note addressed to Mrs. Cyrus J. Fry with manuscript caption.

Together, 3 photographs.
