Lot Description

GRABILL, John C.H. (1849-1903), photographer. Photograph of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody with war correspondents and US Cavalry officers at Pine Ridge, 1891.


9 3/8 x 12 5/8 in. photograph on cardstock mount, copyrighted in the negative by the Grabill P & V Co., Deadwood, SD. Mount with Grabill's Portrait and View Company imprint.

Taken in the middle of January 1891, this photograph captures Buffalo Bill posing on horseback at center, surrounded by several national and international war correspondents at Pine Ridge. Subjects include US Army Scout Frank Grouard, Lieutenant Charles W. Taylor, 9th Cavalry and commander of A Troop, US Indian Scouts, Major John Burke, manager of Buffalo Bill's Wild West, and Albert Burkholder of the New York Herald, his face circled in black ink.
