Lot Description

[CROW UPRISING]. Photograph of a group of Crow prisoners under guard at Crow Agency, Montana, 1887.

7 1/4 x 9 1/4 in. photograph on slightly larger, thick cardstock mount showing a group of eight Crow prisoners captured in November 1887 as a result of the Crow Uprising. Uncredited. Verso bears pencil inscription reading "Crow Prisoners."

The Crow men are arranged in two rows to the side of a building with armed soldiers standing on either side and up behind them on the building's porch. Most of the Crow subjects wear blankets and moccasins, and one wears a buffalo hide coat. The three front most Crow subjects also wear beaded loop necklaces, and there are shackles visible on their legs.

An example of this image viewable on the website of the Montana State Library includes information from various sources identifying some of the subjects as: Deaf Bull, Crazy Head, Coups Well Known (elsewhere called Plenty Coups), Big Hail, Sees with His Ear, and Old Crane. Those sources also note that this image was taken after what was called the Sword Bearer Incident, part of the Crow Uprising of 1887, which involved a failed rebellion of young Crow warriors led by Sword Bearer, who was killed in the fallout.
