Lot Description
SCOTT, George W. (1854-1910), publisher. Cabinet card of Sitting Bull's Ghost Dance, Grand River, D.T., 1890.
Cabinet photograph on cardstock mount with George W. Scott's Fort Yates, Dakota imprint and manuscript notation, "Sitting Bull's Ghost Dance, Copyright applied for."
At the end of 1890, Sam T. Clover, a "horseback" correspondent for the Chicago Herald in the west, was sent to Fort Yates to report on the Ghost Dance movement. During his visit to Sitting Bull’s camp at Grand River, Clover succeeded in taking pictures of the Ghost Dance with a hidden camera. This distant view purportedly shows Sitting Bull sitting between the large gathering of people at left and a tipi at right. (Information obtained from "Sitting Bull: The Photographs," based on the Markus Lindner Listing in the North
Dakota History Journal 2005: 2-21.)
