Four photographs of attendees of the funeral of US Indian Agent, Major James McLaughlin, incl. images by D.F. BARRY.
4 silver gelatin photographs documenting the funeral of Indian Agent James McLaughlin (1842-1923), a controversial figure who gave the order to shoot Sitting Bull, which precipitated the Wounded Knee Massacre.
Includes: 2 photographs credited to D.F. Barry, each 4 x 6 in. (sight), matted and mounted on board. Each mat with D.F. Barry's blindstamp. First, an outdoor view of a group of 14 men, with typed notation on mat, ''Old Timers at funeral of Major James McLaughlin, August 3, 1923, at McLaughlin, South Dakota." Highlighted subjects include Red Tomahawk, who fired the bullet that killed Sitting Bull, Tom Frosted, Sharp Knife, and D.F. Barry. Second view shows four funeral attendees, including D.F. Barry, A.C. Wells, Red Tomahawk, and I.P. Baker. -- 2 snapshots, approx. 2 3/4 x 4 1/4 in., on 9 1/2 x 7 in. cardstock mount, providing additional views of McLaughlin's funeral, including the attendees and Father Bernard Strassmeier outside of the church where services were held.
