Lot Description
HAYNES, Frank J. (1853-1921), photographer. A group of 7 stereoviews highlighted by two self portraits of Haynes with his camera.
7 stereoviews on cardstock mounts, each with the imprint of F. Jay Haynes, Fargo, Dakota Territory on recto and/or verso as well as the series title, all but one coming from the "Northern Pacific Views" series. Five of the stereoviews also include printed information on verso, with details about the series and what it encompasses.
The collection is highlighted by 2 rare stereoviews of F. Jay Haynes with his camera and photographic equipment, each captioned in the negative, including: "Our Artist, Missouri River Falls." This scarcely encountered stereoview captures F. Jay Haynes at 27 years old, at the Great Falls of the Missouri, with his camera. In Following the Frontier with F. Jay Haynes, by Freeman Tilden (1964), the author notes that years after this image was taken, Haynes looked at the picture and said, "What a dashing young man this was! What self- confidence!" (see overleaf). -- "Our Artist bound for the canyon." The view features three men, including Haynes at right, posed by Haynes' photographic equipment, comprised of plate boxes and camera cases on a horse-drawn sled. From the "Yellowstone National Park" series, the image was taken en route to Yellowstone National Park.
Also included are the following scenes from the "Northern Pacific Views" series, as captioned in the negative or in manuscript on verso: "Great Falls, Missouri River." -- "Great Falls on the Missouri." -- "Great Falls from Below." -- "Rainbow Falls." -- "Rainbow Falls #2, M.H. Jewell, fishing 1200 miles above Bismarck on Missouri River."
Together, 7 stereoviews.
