Lot Description

HAYNES, F. Jay (1853-1921), photographer. A group of 9 stereoviews of Ft. Totten, Dakota Territory. Ca 1880s.


9 stereoviews from F. Jay Haynes' "Northern Pacific Views Series," each captioned in the negative "Ft. Totten, Devils Lake and Vicinity."

Includes the following numbers in the series: 957, a view of boys and men fishing along a shoreline. -- 961, showing officers quarters at Ft. Totten, with soldiers posing by cannons mounted in gun carriages. -- 962, a view of a Gatling gun battery in the foreground, with officers quarters and buildings in the background. -- 964, a view of barracks at the fort, with men standing on the porches and sidewalk facing a man with two horses. -- 966, a view of barracks at the fort. -- 967, soldiers on horseback. -- 969, a view of a group of well-dressed men, women, and children posed on the porch of the Post Trader Store, Ft. Totten. -- 970, a distant shot of the Post Trader. -- 974, a side-view of what could be the Post Trader. 

When it was first established in 1867, Ft. Totten policed the Totten Trail, an overland route that extended across Dakota Territory from Southern Minnesota to the goldfields of Western Montana, and later protected and controlled the surrounding Sioux Reservation. After being decommissioned in 1890, the post then became the property of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and served as an Indian boarding school until 1959.
