Lot Description
BARRY, David F. (1854-1934), photographer. Cabinet Card of two Arikara men, Black Horse and Son of the Star.
Cabinet photograph on cardstock mount of Son of the Star (on horseback), and Black Horse. Mount recto with printed caption affixed to lower margin, "Black Horse and Son of the Star," and verso with D.F. Barry's Bismarck, Dakota Territory imprint. Ca 1880s.
An interesting field view, unlike Barry’s studio portraits. In 1874, Son of the Star (1825-1881) came to Washington, DC, where it was agreed that the Arikara would scout for the US military in return for protection from the Sioux. Upon White Shield’s death in 1878 he became chief of the tribe.
