Lot Description
BARRY, David F. (1854-1934), photographer. Cabinet cards of Little Bighorn participants Chief Crow and Belly Fat, KIA at LBH.
2 cabinet photographs on cardstock mounts, each with D.F. Barry's studio imprint on mount recto and/or verso. The subjects, which are identified in the negative or on applied paper label, include: Crow, identified in pencil on verso as "Kange Hunkpapa." Verso with an inked and typed label, "Crow" - also called Pispisa Ho Waste (Good Voice Prairie Dog). Has two arrows in hair. Shot two times by Assiniboine." Barry's Bismarck, D.T. imprint on verso, ca 1880s. Chief Crow was one of the leaders at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He is said to have been shot twice with arrows, which he pulled through and did not break off thus giving him the honor of wearing the eagle quills. Belly Fat, also known as Brave Hawk or Man Who Walks With His Dog. Barry's West Superior, Wisconsin, imprint on recto and verso, ca 1880s. Belly Fat fought along side Kill Eagle at the Battle of Little Bighorn and was a casualty of the fight. Provenance: Cowan's, Fall American Indian Arts, 15 September 2006, Lot 312.
