Lot Description
BARRY, David F. (1854-1934), photographer. Four cabinet cards of Crow warriors, incl. War Man, Spotted Horse, Snake and Big Belly. Ca 1880s.
4 cabinet photographs on cardstock mounts, each with D.F. Barry's imprint on verso, one of which lists Bismarck and Standing Rock, Dakota Territory.
Includes: Studio view with printed, applied paper caption, showing "Spotted Horse, and Snake." Both men wear metal arm bands and hold tomahawks. -- Studio view with period notation on verso identifying the subjects as "Snake & Bad Belly / Crow Scouts / Fort Custer." Snake wears a dentalia shell necklace and feathered hat. Big Belly, who sits beside Snake, also wears a dentalia necklace, silver arm bands, cotton shirt, and tacked belt drop. -- Studio portrait of two men standing, with period notation on verso identifying the subjects as "Crow Scouts / Attached to Fort Custer," with later penciled notation indicating that "War Man" is at left. -- Portrait of "War Man, Crow Chief" as per printed, applied paper caption, likely taken during the same sitting as the previous pose in which War Man is shown with an unidentified scout. With period notation on verso, "A very intelligent Indian." -- Together, 4 cabinet cards of Crow warriors and scouts.
