Lot Description

GILBERT, Zalmon (1841-1897), photographer. Cabinet card of Chief Gall. Mandan, Dakota, ca 1880s.


Cabinet photograph on cardstock mount with imprint of Z. Gilbert, Mandan, Dakota. A studio portrait showing Chief Gall wearing a uniquely-patterned shirt and holding a large catlinite pipe with quilled stem and tobacco bag.

A scarce image by a little known photographer. Gilbert was active in Mandan, Dakota Territory/North Dakota, and Dickinson, North Dakota from 1884-1894.

RARE: Only known example to appear at auction.

Chief Gall (ca 1840-1894) was famous for his military efforts in the wars against the US and for his participation in the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876.
