Lot Description
Cabinet card of Chief Gall., Hunkpapa Dakota. Ca 1880s.
Cabinet photograph on cardstock mount, lacking a studio imprint, possibly taken at Standing Rock Reservation during the 1880s. A portrait showing Chief Gall wearing a metis-style shirt and holding a large pipe made entirely of catlinite. RARE: Only known example to appear at auction.
Chief Gall (ca 1840-1894) was famous for his military efforts in the wars against the US and for his participation in the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876.
