Lot Description

[SCOTT, George W. (1854-1910), photographer]. A group of 3 cabinet cards of Sioux Indians, incl. Chief Gall and Long Dog.


3 cabinet photographs on cardstock mounts, each unmarked but attributed to George W. Scott of Fort Yates, North Dakota. Each subject is identified in an unknown hand on mount recto, with additional notation on verso, which reads, "Made during the 'Ghost Dance' outbreak of the Upper Brule Sioux during the Winter of 1890-91, at Ft. Yates, N.D. (Standing Rock Agency)." Previous owner's name, "D. Powell Johnson Jr." written in red ink in upper margin of each image. Subjects include: Chief Gall. -- Long Dog. -- "Grand Son of Rain in the Face in Dance Costume," as identified on mount. -- Together, 3 cabinet photographs of Sioux Indians.

Chief Gall (ca 1840-1894) was famous for his military efforts in the wars against the US and for his participation in the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876.

Long Dog, also identified as "Goose," fought against Custer's immediate command 25 June 1876. He lived in the Wood Mountain area of ​​Saskatchewan after Little Bighorn and later surrendered to US military authorities with Crow King's band at Fort Buford.
