Lot Description
HAYNES, Frank Jay (1853-1921), photographer. Two cabinet cards of Yellow Dog and White Bull, Crow warriors who fought at Little Bighorn.
2 cabinet photographs on cardstock mounts taken by F. Jay Haynes. One with Haynes' Fargo, D.T. imprint on verso.
Subjects include: Yellow Dog, also known as Old Coyote, a Crow warrior present at the Little Bighorn battle and pursued by Generals Terry and O'Neil into Canada. -- White Bull, Crow chief. Verso with pasted label from the "Second International Congress of Eugenics Exhibit of Scientific Studies," held at the American Museum of Natural History in the fall of 1921, with an ownership record of C.F. Fish of South Swansea, Massachusetts. Joseph White Bull (1849-1947) was Sitting Bull's nephew. He was present at Little Bighorn and is reputed to have killed Custer. As with all oral histories, White Bull on other occasions claimed only to have struggled with Custer.
