Lot Description

HAYNES, Frank Jay (1853-1921), photographer. Cabinet card of Curley, George Custer's scout. Fargo, Dakota Territory, ca 1880s.


Cabinet photograph on cardstock mount. Photographer's imprint on verso.

A three-quarters studio portrait of Curley, a scout to George Custer and survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn. The Crow scout was the first to report on the 7th Cavalry's defeat. He wears his hair in two braids with feathers, earrings, a bandana wrapped around his neck with a slide, and a blanket wrapped around his shoulders.
