[US COLORED TROOPS]. A group of 10 CDVs featuring officers of the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Regiments, USCT.
10 CDV portraits of officers who served in the 54th and/or 55th Massachusetts Infantry Regiments, United States Colored Troops. Subjects include: General Alfred Stedman HARTWELL (2), who served as Captain of Company D., 54th Massachusetts, and Colonel of the 55th Massachusetts. WIA at Honey Hill, SC. -- Charles Pickering BOWDITCH (2), who served as Lieutenant of Company A, 55th Massachusetts, and Captain of Company F, 5th Massachusetts (another colored regiment). -- Frederick E. ROGERS , who served as 2nd Lieutenant of Company A, 54th Massachusetts. WIA at Eppes' Bridge, SC. -- William Pickering HALLOWELL, who served as 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 55th Massachusetts. -- Sigourney WALES (2), who served as Captain of Company F, 55th Massachusetts, and later promoted to Major in November of 1863. -- Cabot RUSSELL, who served as 1st Lieutenant of Company D, 54th Massachusetts, and later promoted to Captain of Company H, same regiment. KIA at Fort Wagner, SC. -- George T. Garrison, the son of famous abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, and who achieved multiple ranks, including Brevet Major, in the 55th Massachusetts. -- Together, 10 CDVs.
[With:] CDV depicting partly destroyed Beacon House on Morris Island, which was utilized as a signal station and headquarters during the Battle of Fort Wagner. Uncredited, ca 1864.
