Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of CDVs of wounded soldiers and medical subjects incl. surgeons and amputees.
9 CDVs, including: 2 poses featuring double amputee Alfred Stratton from the same sitting. New York: K. W. Beniczky, n.d. Stratton is seated, with both of his empty suit sleeves pinned at about elbow length. Stratton, an enlistee of Company G, 147th New York, was wounded by a cannonball during attacks on Petersburg in 1864. -- Standing portrait of a Union officer propped up on crutches and appearing to one leg amputated below the knee, together with another officer who appears to be using his hand to steady his partner. Remnants of a revenue stamp remain on verso. -- Group portrait of 6 young men, likely Civil War veterans, including one seated in the middle of the front row missing one leg and holding a crutch. The man seated in the front row to the viewer's right appears to be missing an arm. Kittanning, PA: C. C. Shadle, n.d. -- Portrait of a pair of medical officers in uniform, including swords. Uncredited, n.d. -- 3 views featuring a tent outside outside a house identified by verso inscription as the home of Surgeon Reed Bontecou, near Harewood Hospital in Washington, DC. Uncredited, n.d. -- An example of "The Empty Sleeve" image featuring amputee Henry Meacham holding his young daughter in his lap. Worcester, MA: C. P. Critcherson, n.d. -- Together, 9 CDVs.
[With:] Cabinet-sized studio portrait affixed to modern cardstock, featuring a bearded man leaning against the back of an upholstered chair. Uncredited, but possibly captured by John Carbutt, n.d. The man is identified as Edmund Andrews, who served as a surgeon at Camp Douglas during the Civil War.
