Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. 3 CDVs of officers KIA or DOW at Fort Wagner incl. Robert Gould SHAW, Gen. George C. STRONG, and Haldimand S. PUTNAM.

Vignetted bust portrait of Robert Gould Shaw in civilian clothing. Boston: J. W. Black, n.d. Verso bears penciled identification above Black's imprint. Gould Shaw was serving as Colonel of the 54th Massachusetts, United States Colored Troops, when he was killed in action at the Battle of Fort Wagner on 7/18/63. -- Standing portrait of George Crockett Strong in uniform. New York: Brady's national Photographic Portrait Galleries, n.d. Verso bears pencil identification and further inscription above and below Brady's imprint. Strong had just been promoted to Major General, and was serving in that capacity when he was wounded at the Battle of Fort Wagner on 7/18/63. He succumbed to his wounds just over a week later on 7/30/63.-- Vignetted bust engraved portrait of Haldimand Sumner Putnam in uniform. New York: C. D. Fredricks & Co., n.d. Verso bears faded imprint. A graduate of West Point, Putnam was serving as Colonel of the 7th New Hampshire Infantry Regiment when he was killed in action at the Battle of Fort Wagner on 7/18/63. -- Together, 3 CDVs.

[With:] CDV depicting partly destroyed Beacon House on Morris Island, which was utilized as a signal station and headquarters during the Battle of Fort Wagner. Uncredited, ca 1864.
