Lot Description

[LITTLE BIGHORN]. Cabinet card group portrait of 17th Infantry officers and their female friends relaxing just prior to setting out on the 1876 campaign.

Landscape-oriented cabinet card group portrait featuring several uniformed officers of the 17th US Infantry, with their female companions, posed sitting on and around the steps of their quarters. Uncredited, ca 1876.

Companies C and G of the 17th US Infantry left Fort Abraham Lincoln in May of 1876, joining with General Alfred Terry's column and being joined by the 7th Cavalry. They set out to confront Lakota and Cheyenne warriors as part of the Great Sioux War, reinforcing the campaign that would end in Custer's disastrous defeat at the Battle of Little Bighorn in late June.
