Lot Description
BARRY, David. F. (1854-1934), photographer. Cabinet card of Comanche, sole survivor of the Battle of Little Bighorn. Bismarck and Standing Rock, Dakota Territory.
Cabinet photograph on cardstock mount of the war horse Comanche, the only survivor of the Custer Massacre, with a caretaker. Mount with applied paper label identifying Comanche and inked notation in lower margin, "The only Equine Survivor of the Custer Massacre." Verso with Barry's Bismarck and Standing Rock, D.T. imprint.
As Myles Keogh's mount, Comanche was never ridden again, and lived for 14 years after the battle, costing the government an estimated $50 per month. An image taken in the aftermath of the Little Bighorn for a public that could not learn enough about the massacre.
