Lot Description
[CUSTER, George Armstrong]. GOFF, O.S., photographer. CDV of Libbie Custer's niece, Mary Ann, while at Fort Abraham Lincoln with the Custer family and 7th US Cavalry.
1 1/4 x 1 3/4 in. (sight) oval vignetted portrait of Mary Ann wearing a 7th Cavalry kepi on her head. Enclosed in a paper sleeve with Goff's stamped backmark on verso and ink inscription to recto: "Fort A. Lincoln 7th Cavalry / M. Mamie."
Mary Ann, or "Mamie" familiarly, was the niece of Elizabeth Custer. She lived at Fort Abraham Lincoln in the Dakota Territory with her aunt and uncle from 1874-1876, during which years the US 7th Cavalry was stationed at the fort.
