Lot Description
[CUSTER, George Armstrong]. SCHOLTEN, James A., photog. CDV of George Armstrong Custer in buckskins. [With:] CDV of Grand Duke Alexis.
2 1/2 x 1 3/4 in. photograph on 2 1/2 x 4 in. cardstock mount with printed information about the image, described on the mount as a "correct copy by the Artist Lockhart: of a Photograph from life, of that brave military Officer General Custer, Original by Scholten St. Louis." With additional information about the photographer, Wm. H. Lockhart of Bryan, Ohio, printed on verso. A distinctive image of Custer in buckskins with a hunting rifle, wearing his trademark red kerchief. Taken on or around 24 January 1874 by James A. Scholten on the occasion of a visit by Russian Grand Duke Alexis, who requested to go on a buffalo hunt with Custer. The group was guided by William "Buffalo Bill" Cody on an expedition led by General William Tecumseh Sherman. This image originally appeared as a tipped-in addition to the 19th-century trade publication, the Philadelphia Photographer. See Custer in Photographs K-113.
