Lot Description
[GARDNER, Alexander (1821-1882), photographer]. Albumen photograph of Bull's Ghost, Lower Yanktonai. [Washington, DC, 1872].
5 1/4 x 7 1/4 in. albumen photograph on 11 x 14 in. Hayden Survey mount with credit to W. H. Jackson below image. Numbered "277" in the negative and identified in pencil on verso.
An intimate studio profile portrait of Lower Yanktonai leader, Bull's Ghost, originally taken by Alexander Gardner in 1872. Bull's Ghost served as Sitting Bull's mouthpiece in the Ghost Dance exercises. Having only one eye, he was purportedly called "One Eyed Riley" by whites. (See McLaughlin, James. My Friend the Indian, 203).
