Lot Description
[GARDNER, Alexander (1821-1882), or William Henry JACKSON (1843-1942)]. Albumen photograph of Medicine Bear, Yankton Dakota. [Washington, DC. 1872].
7 1/4 x 5 1/4 in. albumen photograph on 14 x 11 in. Hayden Survey mount with credit at lower left to W.H. Jackson. A studio view of Yankton Sioux Chief Medicine Bear. Research indicates that the photograph was originally taken by Alexander Gardner in 1872, although it has also been credited to William Henry Jackson.
These deluxe prints were produced by William Henry Jackson and distributed to members of Congress, whose assistance with increased appropriations for his department F.V. Hayden wished to solicit.
