Lot Description

[GARDNER, Alexander (1821-1882), photographer]. Albumen photograph of Good Buffalo, Oglala Lakota. [Washington, DC, 1872].


7 1/4 x 5 1/4 in. albumen photograph on 14 x 11 in. Hayden Survey mount with credit at lower left to W.H. Jackson. A studio view of Oglala Lakota Indian Good Buffalo, or Ta-Tan'-Ka-Was-Te,' originally taken by Alexander Gardner in 1872.

William Henry Jackson printed the series, but he did not make most of the portraits included. These deluxe prints were distributed to members of Congress, whose assistance with increased appropriations for his department F.V. Hayden wished to solicit.
