Lot Description

SHINDLER, Antonio Zeno (1823-1899), photographer. A group of 6 albumen photographs of Yankton Sioux Indians. [Washington, DC, 1867].


6 albumen photographs, approx. 7 1/4 x 5 1/4 in., on cream-colored mounts, 14 x 10 3/4 in., unmarked but originally taken in Washington, DC, by Antonio Zeno Shindler in 1867. The sitters are misidentified in period ink below each portrait.

The following portraits are included: Si-ha-han-ska, "Longfoot," a Yankton Sioux brave. -- Wo-a-ki-a-tsi-kan, "Little Thunder," a Yankton Sioux brave. -- Pte-wa-kan-na-gi, "The Medicine Cow," a Yankton Sioux chief. -- Tow-a-hu-ka-sa-no-pa, "Two Lances," a Yankton Sioux chief. -- Ta-tsan-op-ki-an, "Flying Pipe," a head soldier of the Yankton Sioux. -- Wan-mdi-sa-pa, "Black Eagle," a Yankton Sioux brave.
