Lot Description
SHINDLER, Antonio Zeno (1823-1899), photographer. A group of 8 albumen photographs of Sac & Fox, Iowa, and Kaw Indians. [Washington, DC, ca 1868-1869].
8 albumen photographs, approx. 7 1/4 x 5 1/4 in. or smaller, on cream-colored mounts, 14 x 11 in., unmarked but originally taken in Washington, DC, by Antonio Zeno Shindler, ca 1868-1869. The sitters are misidentified in period ink below each portrait.
The following portraits are included: Ko-shi-way, "The Sea," a chief of the Sacs and Foxes. -- Sac-a-pee, "Shell Fish," a chief of the Sacs and Foxes. -- A group shot of Sac and Fox chiefs, including Sac-a-pee, "Shell Fish," at left, Wo-a-pa-na-ma, "White Fish," at center, and Waw-paw-ko-las-ka, or "Big Bear," at right. -- Wa-com-mo, a Fox brave, taken before 31 March 1868. -- To-hu, "Bear," an Iowa chief. -- Ki-he-ja-in-ga, "Little Chief," an Iowa chief. -- Pi-sing, "Game," a Kaw, 1868. -- Moses Keo-kuk, Junior, "Watchful Fox," Head Chief of the Foxes. Shindler copied this from a daguerreotype by Thomas Easterly, taken in St. Louis, MO, in 1847.
