Lot Description
[SHINDLER, Antonio Zeno (1823-1899), photographer]. Photograph of Iron Black Bird, Yankton Dakota. [Washington, DC, 1867].
7 1/4 x 5 1/8 in. albumen photograph on 14 x 11 in. Hayden survey mount with credit at lower left to William Henry Jackson. A studio portrait of Yankton Sioux Brave Zin-tha-sha'-pa-ma'za, or Iron Black Bird, originally taken by A. Zeno Shindler in Washington in 1867.
In the 1870s, Zeno Shindler's negatives came under William Henry Jackson's control, and prints were placed on Hayden Survey mounts. These deluxe prints were distributed to members of Congress, whose assistance with increased appropriations for his department F.V. Hayden wished to solicit.
