Lot Description

[SHINDLER, Antonio Zeno (1823-1899), photographer]. Photograph of Che-Ko-Skuk, Fox. [Washington, DC, ca 1867].

5 x 7 1/8 in. albumen photograph on 10 7/8 x 13 7/8 in. buff colored cardstock mount. Image numbered "189" in the negative to lower left. Uncredited, but known to have been taken by Shindler.

Published as Entry 90 in: Fleming, Paula Richardson. Native American Photography at the Smithsonian: The Shindler Catalogue (p. 114).

Also listed in William Henry Jackson's 1877 Catalogue of photographs in the US Geological Survey as item #499. The number marked in negative here, 189, is as yet unreferenced.

Taken in Washington, DC before 31 March 1868 during a delegation visit, this portrait of Chief Che-ko-skuk displays his impressive bear claw necklace and pipe tomahawk, which he holds with the same hand that clasps his beaded pipe bag. He also wears an interesting beaver hat with 5-pointed star motif on the front and a single feather standing vertically at the back. This may be the same hat worn Moses Keokuk, another member of the 1868 Sauk and Fox delegation, when he was photographed by Mathew Brady.
