Lot Description

[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865)]. A group of 4 images depicting funeral cars and catafalques that conveyed Lincoln's body through the funeral cities.

4 images. Includes: 3 1/4 x 2 3/4 in. albumen print on larger cardstock mount (print with some toning and wear to edges; spotting and toning to mount). Philadelphia: Henszey & Co., 1865. Verso bears small adhesive label for Moss & Co. Stationers, Philadelphia, PA, along with ink inscription reading, "Mrs Carlin 808 N 23rd st Phila," and 5-cent revenue stamp affixed to upper right corner. Image titled on mount, "No. 3. President Lincoln's Funeral Car, April 22d, 1865." Housed in a wooden frame with affixed silver gelatin image to verso bearing a man smoking a pipe and with an ink presentation inscription written on it. -- Cabinet card illustration of the Lincoln funeral procession in New York City (heavy toning and soiling to print; mount with heavy toning, soiling, and wear including corner loss). New York, NY: Eisenmann, 1879. Verso bears large printed advertisement for "P. Relyea, Practical Undertaker... Undertaker for President Lincoln, New York, April 26th 1865." Image title on mount recto, "Funeral Car of President Lincoln. New York, April 26th, 1865." Depicted are numerous blanketed horses with several African American attendants, all leading the flag-flanked and plumed hearse guarded by a group of armed soldiers. -- CDV featuring the hearse used to convey Lincoln's body in Springfield, IL (heavy toning and mottling to print; mount with some soiling and light wear). Uncredited, though likely originally by S. M. Fasset, Chicago, IL. -- CDV illustration of the hearse that conveyed Lincoln's body from the Executive Mansion to the Capitol building (light toning and wear to print and mount). Washington, DC: Chase & Hatch, 1865. Image titled on verso, "The Funeral Car on which the remains of President Lincoln were conveyed from the Executive Mansion to the Capitol, April 19, 1865." -- Together, 4 images.
