Lot Description

[LINCOLN, ABRAHAM (1809-1865)]. Archive of materials related to the Union Club of Philadelphia, incl. photograph of the club building draped in mourning, 14 April 1865.

5 1/4 x 6 7/8 in. albumen photograph mounted on larger cardstock and thence laid down on typewriter paper (print with good contrast, very few imperfections; mount with some wear and toning; typewriter page with fabric reinforcement to binding edge and creases and small tears to edges). Mount bears printed caption beneath image: "National union Club / Draped in Mourning for the Death of / Abraham Lincoln. / Assassinated April 14th, 1865." A note of identification is inked just below image: "Grandfather J.E.C.O.S.A. President of the Club." And along the upper edge, partly on the typewriter paper and partly on the cardstock mount is another inked note, clarifying the location of the featured building: "'Girard Row' - Chestnut St. between 11th and 12th Sts.; sometimes called 'Cadwallader Row', as the Cadwallader homestead stood at the corner of this block, at 12th Street." -- 3 3/4 in. lg. tricolor ribbon with centrally attached black crepe cockade with metal letters "U" and "L" and metal 5-point star at center. Laid down on typewriter paper with ink inscription reading, "In memory of Abraham Lincoln." -- 5 x 3 1/4 in. glossy card promoting a July 4th celebration featuring "100 Guns Served by the Keystone Battery." Philadelphia: King & Baird, Printers, [1866]. Laid down on typewriter paper above aforementioned ribbon. -- 2 7/8 x 1 3/4 in. printed Union League "Member's Ticket." Laid down on typewriter paper below aforementioned ribbon and card. -- An additional, unmounted "Member's Ticket" to an event taking place on 22 February 1864. -- Glossy "Ladies' Invitation" to the League House on 22 February 1864. -- Stereoview featuring the "Union League Club House, Philadelphia" by James Cremer, Philadelphia, PA. -- Together, 7 items.

Includes: Printed invitation to the funeral of Benjamin Gerhard. Philadelphia, PA, 20 June 1864.
